USA TODAY‘s Your Life Guide to Women’s Health features Ellen Dolgen, author of the menopause book entitled Shmirshky: the pursuit of hormone happiness. In the magazine’s May 31 edition, Dolgen, who uses the pen name “E,” discusses menopause symptoms, women’s health, and living through the changes.

Author Ellen Dolgen, who goes by the pen name E, offers her take on menopause, its symptoms, and how women can prepare for it in the May 31 edition of USA TODAY‘s Your Life Guide to Women’s Health.

The author of the menopause book, Shmirshky: the pursuit of hormone happiness, is featured in the magazine, a special publication of USA TODAY, the nation’s highest circulation newspaper. The article features a Q&A with USA TODAY’s Elena Waskey, in which Dolgen discusses women’s health through the course of menopause and perimenopause, their symptoms, as well as excerpts from Shmirshky.

“Written with her son, Jack, Shmirshky is a light-hearted yet informative narrative about E’s journey through the stages of menopause and what women can expect to experience,” the article states.

“Everyone goes through menopause in one way or another,” says author Ellen Dolgen, whose pen name “E” stands for everyone. “It can be jarring at times, but if you are prepared you can get the support that you need.”

Dolgen explains her use of the term PM&M (which includes perimenopause, the time leading up to menopause, and menopause, defined as the time when a woman has not had a period in 12 months). Even though society has come a long way in how it responds to menopause, women still harbor misconceptions, she says.

“We need to continue to break the silence,” she states. “Most women think that PM&M happens when you’re ‘old.’ This simply is not accurate. Perimenopause typically begins anywhere from your late 30s to mid 40s…when you are young and active. Try telling a 43 year old woman that she’s old – I don’t think so! It’s important to understand this so that you’ll be prepared. Every woman is different. It’s not a one-size-fits-all experience.”

The article also discusses health issues, such as how PM&M symptoms are sometimes mistaken for thyroid problems, coping with hot flashes, treating fluctuations in hormones, a fun Shmirshky Cosmo Recipe, and why women should not fear that their sex lives are over when menopause symptoms appear. “They are worried about losing the O in their lives, and I’m not talking about Oprah!” Dolgen quips. “I went through this, too, and trust me: you do not have to spend the rest of your life sleepless or in a dry spell!”

The article also tells how fans of Dolgen’s menopause book are sharing their experiences with perimenopause symptoms through “Menopause Parties” and getting support and information at her website, “That’s why I compiled all of this information,” the author says. “I wanted to make sure it was easy to understand, a quick read, honest, a tad humorous, and full of love.”
