What is Your Wellness Plan? - Ellen Dolgen

What is Your Wellness Plan?

Menopause is a time to assess your health – not just physically but also emotionally.

These past COVID years, our primary focus has been on preventing adverse outcomes, living a fear-based life of dread of COVID, and staying up on COVID prevention through vaccines, testing, and lifestyle changes.  In addition, many of us are getting up in age.  In a few weeks, I will be 69. I often worry about age-related issues such as Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Osteoporosis, Breast Cancer, etc.

With that in mind, I want to share this excellent interview on wellness hosted by former NAMS Board of Trustees Member and Past-President Dr. Marla Shapiro, a Canadian physician, with Dr. Nanette Santoro, professor, and E. Stewart Taylor Chair, Divisions of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and Reproductive Sciences, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado.

Dr. Santoro explains that wellness is a positive outlook. This positive outlook produces a glow in her patients.  I have heard of an after-glow after great sex……….but this kind of glow is new to me.  She explains that the glow comes from looking toward positive outcomes, not just preventing negative ones.

This is a terrific perspective on healthy living. I asked myself whether I have that glow.  I think I did, pre-COVID, but over these past few years, it has diminished. Dr. Santoro recommends that women adopt a “wellness concept” and focus on a “health span” rather than only focusing on their “life span.”  In the video below, you will find some helpful tips.

  1. Thanks for sharing this important info! We have to be our strongest advocates when navigating the healthcare system. I totally agree on the need to focus more on our ‘health / wellness’ span rather than just ‘life’ span – good video

    1. I agree with you, Louise. We must advocate for ourselves. I am so happy you found the blog helpful. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
